Our research focuses on the field of Innate Immunity and Metabolic Inflammation / Immunometabolism. Our aim is to identify and characterize mechanisms that are involved in the regulation of acute and chronic inflammation in the context of metabolic pathologies, inflammatory diseases and cancer.
In this regard, we study the molecular mechanisms mediating leukocyte recruitment and activation during initiation of inflammation as well as resolution of inflammation. We have identified developmental endothelial locus-1 (DEL-1) as an inhibitor of beta2 integrin-dependent leukocyte-endothelial adhesion (1). Additionally, DEL-1 promotes macrophage efferocytosis and resolution of inflammation (2). Furthermore, we study the crosstalk between inflammation and metabolism at the cellular and systemic organism level (3-5).
Moreover, our group focuses on trained immunity / innate immune memory. We have demonstrated that trained immunity is initiated in the bone marrow by immunometabolic and epigenetic rewiring of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Trained immunity thereby promotes an anti-cancer phenotype of neutrophils. However, maladaptive trained immunity may promote chronic inflammation (6-10).
