Matthias Hecker has been appointed Adjunct Faculty of the Institute for Lung Health, where he oversees the area of Immunomodulation in pulmonary Inflammation. Prof. Hecker is currently Deputy Director of the Department of Internal Medicine II and Medical Head of the Giessen Lung Transplant Program.
Matthias Hecker studied medicine at the Justus-Liebig University Giessen where he obtained his medical degree in 2003. Since then, he joined the Department of Internal Medicine II at the University Hospital of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen as a physician-scientist. After completion of the international graduate program Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung (MBML) he finished his PhD, followed by a postdoctoral position in the department. Prof. Hecker was appointed as a faculty member at the University of Giessen and Marburg Lung Center (UGMLC) and the German Center for Lung Research (DZL). He has published 112 research articles (September 2022) in well-renowned scientific journals, including American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Circulation, Critical Care, Nature Metabolism, European Respiratory Journal.
Prof. Hecker´s lab in interested in the immunomodulatory properties of omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids and novel n-3-derived lipid mediators (e.g. Resolvins and Protectins) on pulmonary inflammation. In this context, the main clinical and experimental focus lies on the aspect of alveolar-capillary barrier dysfunction as observed in the setting of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pneumonia and sepsis. To gain further inside, Prof. Hecker´s group makes use of various in vitro and in vivo models, as well as randomized-controlled clinical trial.
A further research interest lies in the investigation of mitochondrial alterations in trauma and sepsis. To answer emerging questions in this field the Hecker lab has access to sophisticated state-of-the-art methodology concerning assessment of mitochondrial function in health and disease. Special focus in placed in the evaluation of mitochondrial morphology, its impact of pulmonary inflammation and way for molecular modifications.
