He is the coordinator of the Multiscale Imaging Platform at the Institute for Lung Health (ILH), Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), Germany.

Ioannis was born in Crete/Greece and studied Biology (diploma) and Bioinformatics (MSc) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He worked for 5 years at private sector in the field of user support and training, and then he moved to Germany. He did his PhD at the Georg-August University of Göttingen participating at the Molecular Medicine PhD program. His PhD research was held at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine at the Light Microscopy Facility, where he studied cell migration and adhesion in the context of cancer. After the end of his PhD studies he worked as a light microscopy specialist/manager at a number of institutes and universities (Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Technical University of Munich, Radboud University in the Netherlands), and then he took over the coordination of the ILH imaging platform.

The Multiscale Imaging Platform is located at the Centre for Infections and Genomics of the Lung (CIGL), is equipped with cutting-edge light microscopy instrumentation and provides consultation, personalised training and technical support for a wide range of applications.

A multi-functional system, integrates an inverted and an upright two-photon microscope for deep tissue and multimodal (Second Harmonic Generation) imaging. Both microscopes can also operate as fully functional confocal setups with a variety of laser lines and objectives, while it is also provided light sheet imaging for small volumes. The inverted system is also equipped with live imaging setup (temperature and CO2 control), offering the ability for long-term live imaging experiments. With a variety of software modules, the users can also perform large areas scans, 3D reconstruction of acquired volumes and computational clearing of images.

Applications
· Deep (Cleared) Tissue Imaging
· Multi-spectral Imaging (Phenotyping)
· (Long Term) Live Cell Imaging
· Live Organoid Imaging
· Large Regions Scan (Screening)
· Macromolecular kinetics fast imaging

Techniques
· Multi-Photon microscopy
· Second and Third Harmonic Generation
· Spectral Confocal Microscopy
· Light Sheet Microscopy
· Functional Imaging (FRET and FRAP)
· Resonant Scanning
· Online Computational Clearing

The MIP also provides tools and assistance for automation in image analysis with custom-made algorithms and ensures the image data management under the FAIR principle with the usage of the OMERO system, using several TB of available online storage.

Besides the day-to-day support and individual introductions, the platform can provide open workshops and courses for a variety of subjects in the field of light microscopy and image analysis. Additionally, the imaging platform assures that the optical systems operate within specifications, using regular quality controls, based on widely accepted tests and workflows. In parallel the Multiscale Imaging Platform participates in national and international efforts in the field of quality assurance for light microscopy (QUAREP-LiMi, German Bioimaging, European Light Microscopy Initiative).

Contact

Dr. rer. nat.
